How should you be introduced?

I’m the kind of person who has full of pride in me. I’m aware of that and I admit it. So when I was able to see Sonia Roco’s campaign ad in the TV saying “I am Raul Roco’s wife” before saying she’s a teacher for how many years, I was taken aback.

I don’t know about you but if I am running for a public office, I would rather focus and highlight on the things that would tell people why I should be voted rather than who is my spouse (regardless if he’s dead or not).

It has always been my conviction that I am not just my father/mother’s daughter. I am not just my boyfriend’s girlfriend nor will I be just my husband’s wife. I have my own identity and I would rather you note that first before saying I am someone else’s affiliation. I’d rather be introduced me as “Mae Paulino, the designer. You know she’s her father’s daughter blah blah blah.” Or just plain Mae of lastleaf.org.

It’s one of the reasons why I kept on rejecting the idea of working for my father during summer when I was still studying. Aside from I have a lotto live up to, I want to make a name for myself. I want to set a turf that I can say my own, where I will be Mae Paulino, an individual.

Which brings me back to Sonia Roco, shouldn’t our candidates be the same? Sonia Roco should be Sonia Roco and not some dead man’s wife (please, I loved Raul Roco, I would have wanted him to run the country before he passed away unless he got some skeleton in the closet that would prove that he will not be an effective leader, so I’m not intending to insult him here). I would rather see Osmena for who he is and not just some former president’s offspring.

Dynasties, it sucks. The fact that they get voted just makes things worse.

The sad thing is that it works. Association really works. And you can exploit it. It’s a marketing ploy to associate yourself with something people can easily remember.

Take Susan Roces. If not for FPJ, no one would give a crap about her and her political moves. Or GMA. Why doesn’t she drop the Macapgal? Any assocaitions you can think of?

And Sonia Roco? Let’s face it, what else about her is worth knowing and remembering? Being Raul’s wife, right?

    Exeunt stage right.

It’s one thing to use this kind of introduction to give people just an “idea” of you are and who your mentor is/was, it’s another to use it as the ONLY introduction. The candidates should focus more on proving themselves worthy of the position, not worthy to be called the wife or daughter of whoever — alam na naman natin yun eh. Sadly though, Alex is right. From what I’ve noticed, association does work for these politicians. =/

Sonia Roco is as much of a traditional politician as Raul Roco is. I know a lot of people are enamored with the late senator but he’s not that great, imho. Hearing him talk in public is no different from hearing other politicians giving out their empty promises.

Sonia’s ad is very creepy. Nasa likod ba naman si Raul. WHich reminds me, Raul Roco’s ad is the best ad EVER - not just limited to political ads. That 2 minute music video was absolutely golden.

Yeah, he’s better - but not necessarily good. :)

You don’t like how my page looks like? I’m sticking with it for the time being.

I didn’t say that.. I just figured you still don’t know how to manipulate WP and CSS so the very basic is good for learning these kinds of stuff

Yeah, I agree. Aquinos are dynasties too. They should resign, stay at home and give the chance to others.

yeah, i am in complete agreement with what you’ve written. Yes, given the fact that Sonia Roco is the wife of Raul Roco and he is somebody; a name in the field of politics and he must be made mention in her introduction to let the people easily remember who Sonia Roco is but not to the point that the emphasis is more on how great his husband was than who she really is and what she can offer to this country. Focus must be on her; her ideals and all…
