What should a Free Man Do?

Poster of 300 The MovieWarning: Spoilers ahead. (What? I can’t help it…)

I was able to watch 300 last Saturday and I was so glad that I did! *sigh* I want to watch it again! I wonder when its CD version will be on sale (LOL).

You see, I’m not very fond of watching movies in the cinema (specially if it’s my own money haha) because I usually leave regretting what I did. That’s why I stay away as much as possible from feel-good movies which has been commercialized so much, that is unless the reviews say otherwise.

I don’t know if I liked 300 because I love watching epic movies or if it’s because I love and admire the Spartans’ way of life, the way they fight, their tactics and all. Maybe it’s both.

When I saw 300’s trailer I said to myself “I’m going to watch that film!” There’s something about it that is powerful, captivating and enticing (to me at least). Now I know what it is… Leonidas is not only handsome but super duper sexy as well!

Gosh I’m starting to wish that I am a Spartan woman, never mind if they discard babies who are sickly and are born with defects. My goodness those men are… wow! :P Man… they made me feel like a woman, I can’t believe I’m saying this as if I’m some high school girl ogling after my crush haha! Can’t help it, those faces coupled with those bods, who can resist? LOL Katwo even said that a lot of guys went out of the theater knew their one true love… Leonidas! wahahaha

One of the best scenesThere’s several things that’s puzzling me though… Is the Captain’s son, and that one soldier, gay or something? Because they look like they’re flirting to me! Too bad his head was cut off… stupid immortals! Ooops, did I just said that? :D

Another is… was Persia full of mutated people? (points to the pic to the right) That’s just one of the “mutated enemy” they had to face, and he scratched Leonidas’ eye! Grr! My poor King…

There are a lot of memorable scenes (and lines, one of which is my status message on YM) there, like when the Persians’ ships sank, it was raining and Leonidas wasn’t even affected by it. He looks so powerful, I can’t help but rejoice with them! And… a lot more I’d rather not mention, don’t want anyone getting mad at me for spoiling it for them noh? :)

But really, for someone who hates gore images, killing, heads flying in the air (no their body is not connected), blood all of over, death, ugly enemies, obvious computer-generated backgrounds, I really, really, really, really love this film! If you want to watch it and don’t have anyone to watch it with, I’m available on weekends as long as it’s your call hahaha (kidding as usual) :P

I wonder if some movie outfit would do a movie out of Genghis Khan’s life as well? They have one of the best tactics in all IMHO (they do not have battle cries because that would alert their enemies, they are very quiet and they attack at night, while their enemies guards are down, genius isn’t it?!), why would they be able to conquer almost 3/4 of the world, right?! They’re simply one of the best

You’re like the fifth or something person I know who said the movie was good. I’m not much into epic movies because they kind of bore me, plus I don’t really like gore, but seeing all so many posts and reviews about 300, I feel like I should watch it too. Hmmm.

    I need time.

Mae, I loved the trailer when I first saw it. I saw the trailer with my bro and all we could say was “WOW!” Astig pati sounds. I haven’t seen the film yet but I know the story because I’ve read the original Frank Miller comics (where the movie was based). It’s really, really cool.

bat ganun? Hindi ko sya masyadong nagustuhan? hehehehe! I mean, it’s okay, but i don’t find it extraordinary, it’s just kind of like Troy and Gladiator. Pero okay naman sya, haha. astig ung “discipline” ng mga Spartans. Their fighting technique is one of a kind! if they were more than 300, they would have successfully annihilated those Persians (mga immoral sila, haha!). No retreat, no surrender: sa kanila pala galing yun. hehehe. :) Yun nga lang, puro dibdib ng mga lalake at babae ang pinakita dun, hahaha! anuba. napansin mo? nakakatawa talaga. LOL.

@joni, kaso bawal sa kanila makipag-war that time, kaya 300 lang dinala niya para lang ma-ward off yung mga Persians… Siguro kung hindi lang sila masyado superstitious malamang, matatalo nila mga Persians, but then… we wouldn’t have this epic ;)

@ Liz oo nga panoorin mo na! :D

  10. Mae (03/12/2007 at 10:10 pm)

@Becca: I didn’t pay much attention to the poster when I saw it first as well but when I saw the trailer… wow! :D

@Ezwoodz: wahaha nakakapagtaka ba? eh magaganda naman sila ah… gusto ko rin naman ng mga “chick flicks” kaso… hindi ko talaga panonoorin yun sa sinehan unless nilibre ako wahaha kasi… ewan ko ba… nasasayangan ako eh… minsan I leave the cinema thinking that I’ve been robbed of my money kasi buzz lang yung ginawa sa film…

Ganito yan Mae, Persia invaded the Greek cities and most of the city states weren’t really militaristic. The true soldiers at that time were the Spartans. Everybody else were farmers, teachers, and such. Spartans grew in very rugged terrain and were considered barbarians by most of the other Greeks. When Xerxes invaded, the spartans weren’t really committed. So Leonidas sent only 300 of his men - including himself. Those 300 were sired men (meaning, they had children that could replace them should they perish). I think it was because of the fake “prophecy” by the oracles that the other spartans weren’t committed. As I recall, there were actually around 30,000 troops were sent to face the persians but Leonidas was the chief military guy. He ordered everybody else back while he (and his trained spartans) faced the persians. He allowed two spartans (i think), to return and tell their story to the rest of Greece so they would unite as one. So it was like a sacrificial maneuver to get the rest of the country to unite.

Go tell the Lacedaemonians, stranger passing by,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

or something like that, the epitaph on the marker at thermopylae. galeng. going to see it when i got time.

joni, yung discipline ng spartans — that was the phalanx (also used in detail by the myrmidons in “troy”), used by greek hoplites, precursor of the roman testudo formation. (i’m such a geek, what can i say)

jozzua, it wasn’t just the 300 spartans who died at thermopylae, there were several hundred slaves (thespians ata), but the odds were still extremely bad.

Don’t treat 300 as historically accurate nor as a film that’s completely loyal to the graphic novel. But treat it as fiction based on those two accounts. Then you’d truly appreciate the film. You can’t fully appreciate it without appreciating the historical bit and the graphic novel. Sure some fans of the graphic novel will be up at arms but I like the way they romanticized it a bit.

The distorted bit was Frank Miller’s rendering. The film was pretty much faithful to the images save for Leonidas wife. She was pretty hot in the film.

Leonidas yelled too much. Stelios became the “token pretty boy character” contrary to his character in the graphic novel. Xerxes is still as gay as ever. It’s just funny how you’d see Faramir as Delios.

It’s an absfest for the girls. It’s a movie full of beefcakes that had me tapping my flabby gut. :p

The film portrayed the phalanx quite well but definitely with a lot more theatrics than necessary.

BTW, there’s a feature on Genghis Khan in Discovery some time back. Genghis Khan’s strength was pretty much in his cavalry and the composite bow.

The Greeks operated in a different way, resorting to the still-used hammer and anvil tactics (phalanx with a flanking cavalry/companions) with a mix of skirmishers and infantry. The film didn’t show that since the Battle of Thermopylae wasn’t an open battle but a delay tactic. But this was particularly true in the Battle of Palataea (the last scene where Delios was captain).

However in later centuries, the immobility of the hoplite phalanx rendered it obsolete in the time of the Romans with their flexible battle formations (just watch Gladiator) which could have outmaneuvered the Greek hoplites in open battle.

There’s a big difference between Genghis Khan and the Greeks, with Genghis Khan coming much later in history and definitely with the technological advantages. But I’m a fan of Alexander’s military genius so that’s that. Hehehe.

Heck, if I have any inaccuracies in the details, just please correct me. :p

And I have to say, I enjoyed it immensely :D haha

@Jozzua and Alex: This post is supposed to be just a blatant rave for the movie… but what can I say… you can never talk to men about wars and such because I think that topic makes you more attentive to the discussion, of course aside from sports.. and business haha :P

But thanks for the additional information, I thought I knew it all, but apparently not :)

Hmm… I think I saw the trailer somewhere like September of October last year, and I’ve been waiting for the movie ever since. Even now, the trailer still gives me goosebumps whenever I watch it. I’ve seen the movie as well — it’s easily one of the best I’ve seen this year. The visuals are great, but I think the scoring could have been done better.

Uhmmm… and one itty-little bit more: its “Leonidas”, not “Leonidus”.

    Cheers!
