Debating is not for businessmen only

I believe I heard that the opposition and administration had a debate in front of businessmen early this week or late last week, can’t remember really… But I know something like that happened. When I heard they had a debate, I was really surprised and wondered why I wasn’t able to watch it until they said in front of the businessmen. I turned away in disgust and just focused on my work again.

If there’s one thing that I want our politicians to do, it is debate. Just to see who has better brains, or if any of them really have any, no offense. It is a good way to pick a candidate, to see how they will answer questions without a couple of days for their aides to think about it for them.

But I was disgusted by what they did. The Philippines is not composed of businessmen, they may have some power but they are not the only voters here. And it just sucks that every election time, candidates are so fast to please these men in suits. Sure, money talks… but in the end of the day, they should ask, who is the majority? Surely, it isn’t the businessmen.

Instead of Meeting de Avance where they have verbal fight with each other like that of kindergartens, why not have a grown-up debate in front of the majority so they could see who really knows these stuff. Of course, I do not rule out the idea of course, we can’t give politicians money for their campaign, but then again, at the end, who will most likely rule come election time? They could use the money these businessmen gave them to cheat of course… But it’s beside the point.

While writing this, I remembered when Cesar Montano, a senatorial candidate, was asked about his stance about extra-judicial killings. I can’t remember what his answer was but I know it was stupid. Really now! All you need is a newspaper and/or TV and you’ll know what’s happening! I don’t like watching news but I still know what extra-judicial killings are, why it is happening (of course based on my own assumptions) and how I think it could be stopped. I tried looking for anything that pertains to what I am saying but couldn’t find any, even in blogs, I can’t believe no one talked about it. Or maybe I’m just using the wrong keywords.

Businessmen bring in the moolahs that these politicians put in their pockets even whenever everyone is looking. We need more really need more oversight to prevent this from happening.

One more thing honey, some businessmen aren’t even voters in this country. Which really, really sucks. They’re only here in the country to earn money and they need all the confidence and assurance that they can get from the politicians that they will rake in money for their company.

Cool.

Hi there, visiting from Mitzh’s blog.

Interesting post. I have nothing against businessmen BTW. I think they have the right (and are just as powerful) in getting a collective/influential vote among their peers as much as the religious and socio-political groups.

As for the “debates,” I think it would take great patience and much scrutiny to sift through the crap the politicians unload. Philippine politics is based on some sort of patronage system and honestly, I don’t think debates really help, if a collective group of people are already sold to a ‘patron’ anyway.

This apart from the fact that people tend to be impressed with rhetorics from a forceful speaker. Like, “Wow! He “sounds” intelligent.” Backtrack a bit, is he really intelligent? And should intelligence be the basis to vote for someone?

As for nuisance candidates, that can’t be helped. Wherever. I think it’s one of the advantages of a democracy. People can “go green” or go whichever way they want.

Just my two cents. :D Feel free to engage me in a discussion.

    I speak Tagalog BTW. Thanks!

And by all means, Jake the Miserable, they should expound on their platforms, publicly. No one objects to ‘being vocal.’ Wouldn’t that be evidence in the future if they fuck up? (Excuse my language but we’re all adults here, right?) ;D

    Thanks again!

Super sorry (tanan-nanan-tanan)…
