Facing your fears

I came across the Positivity Blog not too long ago (OK, well maybe it was too long ago) the first article I read was about “Why Some People Are Almost Always Successful?” And I have to say that it is indeed a very helpful article, motivational and inspiring, then later on (as in a few weeks after that) I saw the article that triggered this post (hmmm actually this comment is more like it): “5 Life Changing Keys to Overcoming your Fear

I am the type of person who has a lot of fears - though thankfully I do not have any phobias (yet?) - and always like to do things that will make me “fearless” thus I almost always scare myself to death or regret buying something that I would never wear but bought it anyway — just because.

So, anyway, if you did not want to click on that link, the comment mentioned that if you’re afraid of numerous things, it would be helpful if you would list them all down and then the actions you want to take to overcome that fear. Just like what I’m trying to do right now.

So, the things that I’m afraid of:

  1. What other people might think.

I don’t know where I got this, the consequence is that I’m always on the safe side, specially when it comes to clothes and accessories (or maybe that’s why I don’t like clothes much). I don’t want to experiment, don’t want to wear sleeveless or skirts… Afraid that it is too vulgar for other people.

  2. Heights.

My knees can be kinda wobbly whenever I go up the overpass, specially those new MMDA overpass that had been all over the place. I just don’t like it because one, it’s not concrete — I can actually feel whenever someone is walking fast or worse, running. The tendency is that I usually go near the handles, just in case, you know.

And two, while I am going up, I can actually see how high I have been and it makes me even more scared. I remember when I was in high school, before going home, we have to go up this really high overpass with the MRT under us. It freaks me out, whenever they want to make me cry they would let go of my hand and I would be there for a few minutes, hehe silly times. Really, I don’t like crossing bridges and I do not enjoy Robinson’s escalators.

  3. Cockroaches.

I don’t really scream-scream whenever I see one, I just freeze up for a few seconds and then start looking for 1.) anything that I can use to kill it or 2.) someone I can ask to kill it. But it’s different when they’re already flying aack.

  4. Ghosts.

I already mentioned that. Do I still need to explain? Do you reckon that it must be more on afraid of death?

  5. People.

Yes, yes, I’m afraid of the dead and the living, can’t get any pathetic than that. lol I don’t like the idea of having to go in front of a lot of people to talk, I get so nervous that I tend to forget what I’m saying or say really, really stupid things like ask someone what use is .tag-cloud for. Really!

  6. Going home late.

The ideas that my mom feeds me with and the things I lead myself to believe. I remember in College, we had to stay until late night for a class production. I walked to our house with a pen in one hand and with the point sticking out and I would be really alert even though I’m so exhausted already.

I tried putting goals on how to overcome these fears of mine but I couldn’t make any goal that is quantifiable (of course it’s because the fears are not quantifiable either). Can anyone care to help me?

So what are you afraid of? Leave a comment or post it in your blogs if you want to :)

I’m afraid of cockroaches too and I’m seldom able to squish them with something (di ko kaya!). What I do is I run to get a can of Baygon and spray profusely at the darn thing until it is soaking wet. ung parang nagsswimming na sya. lol

If I were you I wouldn’t want to go home late too, layo kse ng bahay nyo, hehehe!

So what are you afraid of? — I’m sort of afraid of the future. =/

    1) I think everyone is. Self-consciousness.

    2) Ako rin, pero ewan ko kumbakit adik ako sa mga high-flying rides ng mga amusement parks. :D

    3) Ayos lang. Master ko na nga siguro ang iba’t-ibang paraan para pumatay ng ipis.

    4) Never. I see them everyday.

    5) Sabi nga naman nila, mas matakot ka sa buhay na tao dahil ‘yun lang ang may kapasidad na pumatay sa’yo.

    6) Ako, going home early… in the morning. :D

Cockroaches have no right to fly, AT ALL! I’m more afraid of cockroaches than rats. Eeek. We even have a pest control team sa dorm before (composed of our guy friends in the other unit) who we call whenever there’s a flying roach in our room. My thesismate taught me a clean way of killing roaches — spray it with alcohol! But then you’d have to chase it first.

    Haha, basta, no roaches!

I’m also afraid of frogs. Seeing one makes me shudder…feel ko tatalunan nila ako! May childhood “trauma” ako dun. I was playing with some water (haha bad!) and when I picked up this cover for the container, I felt something wet and squishy under — may palaka pala! Yak!

For deep stuff…kinda same w/ Joni — the future kinda scares me too. And losing the ones I love. :-s
